At the request of the Gion Matsuri Yamaboko association, 60 students registered in the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (KUFS) LinguaLink translation and interpretation human resources database served as interpreter-guides for foreign tourists at the Gion Festival Yoiyama Pre-Festival over a two-day period.
In preparation for volunteer interpreter services, participating students attended training sessions covering the Gion Festival's culture and history*1 as well as helpful interpretation skills.*2
*1 This portion of the training was provided by Professor Kotaro Murayama (Department of Global Tourism, Faculty of Global Engagement)
*2 This portion of the training was provided by Professor Akiko Sato (Department of British and American Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies)
On July 15 and 16, the students were stationed on the intersections of Shijo-dori Boulevard with Karasuma-dori and Shinmachi-dori Boulevards to provide interpretation services in English and other languages.
Through their activities, students were able to witness the Gion Festival up close and experience the satisfaction of explaining their own culture using languages they had learned in school. It served as motivation for continuing studies and continuing future contributions to the local community.
