On Sunday, October 26, students from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (KUFS) hosted a booth at the Shichido Enmado Festival, which was put on by Shichijo Enmado (the Shichijo Branch Temple of Shoboji Temple) and the Nishinana Han'eikai Shopping Arcade.
The booth was staffed by student volunteers from the Department of Hispanic Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies. Their "Spanish Learning Quiz" was a hit, with some of the participating children managing to give all correct answers to questions on characters from anime, video games and the like.
In addition, members of the Kawakami Seminar Umineru Project (Department of Global Tourism, Faculty of Global Engagement) took a turn hosting the booth, selling their "Umineko Glass" black-tailed-gull-themed candies inspired by the sea glass of the local coastline in Mihama-cho, Wakayama Prefecture (where the project is based), and also selling "Umineru" starch syrup products inspired by the beautiful sky and seas of Mihama-cho. They held a novel tasting session for Umineru, during which children enjoyed scooping out the starch syrup candies they had shaped in molds.
Student volunteers also sold misu, a Korean beverage made from grain powder, as well as "Greek yogurt" which is popular these days.
The event provided a splendid opportunity for KUFS students to meet and get to know members of the local community, area companies and the junior chamber, as well as students from other universities. All participants felt proud to contribute to their local community and society.
