On Sunday, May 17, the 2026 Matsunoo Okaeri Festival for Matsunoo Taisha Shrine in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto was held in grand fashion.
Just as with the Oide Festival held in April, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (KUFS) students participated in this festival for their third year. KUFS students joined members from the shrine to transport the deity from Nishi-Shichijo Tabisho back to Matsunoo Taisha Shrine.
In addition to currently enrolled students, KUFS graduates who had participated in past festivals for the shrine also took part this year.
All present carried the portable shrine with great care amid unprecedented hot weather, and upon reaching Munakata Shrine, they all pledged to join again the following year. The festival helped everyone forge strong bonds, with participants here and there telling each other that they look forward to meeting again next year.
It proved to be a valuable opportunity for all involved to experience the traditional culture of Kyoto through one of its festivals, and for this, everyone at KUFS is truly grateful.
