If you are a student at one of our Partner Universities then you have the opportunity to study at KUFS as an International Student. Only exchange students who will be studying at KUFS are needed to choose which course they will learn, Japanese course or English course. Please contact your International Office for information on the application and selection procedures.

Step 1 Nomination

Partner universities must fill in the Nomination Form and submit it via Google Form during the specified nomination period. Applicants will not be accepted without the submission of completed Nomination Form.

The documents are to be obtained and completed through the online application system only during the application period.
Any documents submitted after the deadline are not to be accepted for whatever reason.

(Certifying that you have a sufficient budget while you live in Japan; one million yen for six months and two million yen for a year)

[ Japanese Course ]
A document certifying that the applicant has studied the Japanese language for a total of more than 150 hours and is able to read and write Hiragana and Katakana.
[ English Course ]
A document certifying that the English language proficiency equivalent to a score of 62 on TOEFL iBT or 5.0 on IELTS for non English speaking countries and regions.

* If documents are written in languages other than Japanese or English, please attach an official translation in English or Japanese. The translation must be certified by a government office or enrolment institution.

Course related fees

Exchange Students In accordance with the provisions of the exchange agreement, students are granted a full tuition waiver and that no application fees and guarantor required (KUFS will act as the guarantor). However, the classes of flower arrangement, tea ceremony, calligraphy, and so on will be charged separately. More details announced at the orientation.
Other Partner University Students Please check with your coordinator at your home university.

Living cost and Accommodation

Living Cost

All students are recommended to have available about 900,000 - 1,800,000 yen per year to cover rent, meals, books, mobile phone, living expenses and other personal costs.

Accommodation Arrangement by KUFS

Kyoto University of Foreign Studies arranges accommodation only for those who submit the accommodation application form. Due to the limited number of dormitory rooms, you might be arranged to move into an apartment room. KUFS will decide which room you will be into, therefore, we might not be able to meet your request.
All rooms organized by KUFS are furnished single rooms.
Please note that there is NO Homestay arrangement via KUFS.
Rent payment can be paid with your credit card. The first rent payment (for 1st term) is due before you come to Japan. The due date for 2nd term will need to be paid before the second term begins.

* Deposit・・・ The deposit will basically paid by KUFS, but if the room condition is quite dirty, damaged and need to be cleaned, you will be required to pay for the recovery cost.

Finding housing on your own

KUFS will introduce you to a real estate agency that will assist international students in finding housing in Kyoto.
This real estate agency always helps KUFS international students find housing, and they can help in English as well as Japanese, so please do not hesitate to let them know your desired rent, area, etc.

School Location and Access

Personal Transportation

  • Bikes are especially convenient in traffic-congested Kyoto.
  • Lock your bike when not in use. (Use more than 2 locks, if possible) Bikes, as a rule, are treated as vehicles, and therefore are not allowed to be parked in prohibited areas. These areas are designated by the Kyoto City Government.
    They are clearly marked and strictly controlled. Your bike will be removed if you parked in prohibited areas, therefore, pay close attention to where you park your bike.
  • [ To reclaim a removed bikes ]
    Removed bikes are kept at the bike pound shown on the board where you parked your bike. To reclaim your bike, the following items are required: the key(s) of your bike, identification, and 2,300 yen handling fee. Bikes should be claimed as soon as possible, as after 4 weeks they will be disposed.
