Outline

1. Aim of the Program

These Kyoto Intensive Japanese Programs are offered by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies ("KUFS"). It is designed for students who wish to improve their Japanese proficiency while participating in group works with KUFS students and experiencing Japanese culture in Kyoto — an attractive, historical city and college town. We are looking forward to welcoming you here in Kyoto.

2. Duration of the Program

Summer July 14 (Fri.), 2023 - July 29 (Sat.), 2023
Winter February 1 (Wed.), 2023 - February 16 (Thu.), 2023

4. Classes and Cultural Activities (approx. 30 hours in total)

Classes
  • Intensive basic-level Japanese classes
    *
    All Japanese language classes are provided in small classes (approx. 10-15 per class) and divided into different proficiency levels, basic to advanced.
    *
    All Japanese language classes focus on authentic Japanese used in situations the learners may encounter during their stay in Japan and aim to develop their fluency through task-based activities. The levels and contents of the tasks used in classes differ depending on each learner's Japanese proficiency level.
  • Traditional Japanese cultural experiences (Tea ceremony, Calligraphy, etc.)
  • Conversation with KUFS students
Activities
  • Maiko Culture Experience
  • One-day Kyoto study trip
  • Cultural exchange activities with KUFS students, Welcome & Farewell party
  • Gion Festival (Summer Only)

5. Maximum Capacity

40 participants (min.: 10 participants)

In the case that the number of participants does not reach the minimum capacity, this program will be cancelled.

6. Qualification

  • Applicants must be either undergraduate students, graduate students or adults (with a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalency).
  • Applicants must have Japanese language proficiency of at least JLPT N5 or equivalent and be able to read and write Hiragana and Katakana.
  • Applicants must agree to the "Declaration and Terms & Conditions".

NOTE

All classes will be conducted in Japanese
Those who have no background in learning Japanese are NOT eligible to apply to this program.

7. Program Fee

JPY 200,000

Including Tuition and class materials, accommodation, scheduled study trip and activities, and a transportation pass (Accommodation ⇔ KUFS).
Not including Flight tickets, travel expenses between the airport and the accommodation, insurance and other personal expenses.

8. Accommodations

Private dormitory (Single room)

Facilities Air conditioning, sink, refrigerator, Wi-Fi
[Shared Area] Automatic door locks, elevator, cafeteria, kitchen, laundromat
Furnishings Single bed, bed linens, desk, chair, shelf, curtains, light fixtures, wardrobe, toilet, and shower room

KUFS will decide which room you will be staying.

Facilities and furnishings may differ depending on the type of accommodation.

Please note that toilet paper, towels, and toiletries are not provided.

9. Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the program, your certificate of completion will be issued at no additional cost.

10. Scholarship

KUFS scholarship is not available.

Email us (incoming_oips@kufs.ac.jp) with a copy scan of Passport and Photograph.

4cm x 3cm photograph size (full face without a hat against plain background). The photograph must be in color, and have been taken within 3 months of the application.

Please contact us if you do not have a passport.

Useful Information

1. Transportation to and from Kyoto

Program participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Kyoto. KUFS is not responsible for any loss or additional expenses incurred due to delay or change in services due to illness, weather, transportation strikes, quarantine or other causes beyond the University's control.

2. The Arrival Day (the first day of the program)

Please make arrangements to arrive at KUFS by 14:00.

3. Visa and Entry into Japan
