An online lecture titled “Journeying through Lusophone countries” using Microsoft Teams was held on Friday, May 14th, with guest speaker H.E. Mr. Jiro Maruhashi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Angola.
In the first half of the lecture, Mr. Maruhashi introduced his audience to the various job responsibilities of diplomats both at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassies abroad. He believes that diplomacy is about “maintaining world peace and prosperity.” The second half was full of intriguing episodes about his experiences of living in Lusophone countries (Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Angola), from his early years of intensive studying to overcome his difficulty in language interpreting, to his current challenges of conducting diplomatic activities in the midst of a pandemic.
The lecture was attended by about 30 participants, including faculty and staff. The Department of Brazilian and Portuguese Studies intends to continue hosting events that allow current students to engage with professionals working both at home and abroad as well as KUFS alumni. Students from other departments are welcome to join too!
