The Japan University English Model United Nations, JUEMUN, jointly hosted by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies and Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, held the first online JUEMUN in its history with 136 students, 18 student leaders and 118 delegates, participating.

Students from both KUFS and KCUFS served as student leaders chairing three online commission meetings and 12 committee meetings. KUFS students from the Faculty of Global Engagement and the Department of British and American Studies took part as country delegates, with Prof. Angus McGregor facilitating the classes and delegate training, and Prof.Ian Gibson as administrator, who took over following the sad passing of KUFS Professor Craig Smith who co-founded JUEMUN with KCUFS professors Lori Zenuk-Nishide and Donna Tatsuki.


The student delegates simulated the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women deliberating on the Agenda: The Empowerment of Women. Working in small committees, the delegates submitted proposals for draft resolutions, negotiated amendments and voted on a total of 12 draft resolutions that focused on the following topics: 1) Rural Women; 2) Domestic Workers and Migrants; 3) Low-skilled women; and 4) Executive Women.

Due to ongoing situation with the Coronavirus and online restrictions, this year’s conference was limited to only 14 Japanese universities with both undergraduate, graduate and exchange students participating. Next year, all being well, the 12th annual JUEMUN will be hosted on the campus of Kyoto University of Foreign Studies and will welcome student delegates from both Japanese and international universities.
