On Monday, December 16th, His Excellency Mr. André Spiteri, the non-resident Ambassador of Malta to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Yoshikazu Morita, Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors, and President Takeshi Matsuda, and shared his thoughts on promoting international exchanges.

Ambassador Spiteri has studied in Japan and is fluent in Japanese. He shared his own experience of how “if you know the language, you’ll be met with more friends and opportunities.” Dr. Morita said, “you’re very approachable. Please talk in front of our students.” The Ambassador answered, “let’s provide opportunities for young people through language. I’ll be happy to cooperate.”

The Republic of Malta is located just south of the Italian island of Sicily, and is known for the historic Malta Summit that declared an end to the Cold War. Its capital is Valetta, and English is one of the official languages. The country is safe, and because commodity prices are low, Malta is gaining increasing popularity as a study abroad destination among Japanese students. The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Malta in Kyoto opened in the city in July 2019. The Honorary Consul is Mr. Shigeru Abo.
