On Thursday, July 4th, a special lecture by Kiyotaka Akasaka, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information and current President of Foreign Press Center Japan, was held surrounding the theme of “the world as our partner.”
With a great deal of experience in international institutions such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Health Organization (WHO), he lectured students on the “qualifications, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform well in a global enterprise” and “the advantages of studying abroad.” His interesting themes won the hearts of many curious students in the audience.
Questions from students followed the lecture, such as “what exactly does flexible thinking and understanding differences in cultures and values mean when working or living in different countries?” Mr. Akasaka answered, “it’s important to keep your mind open, to interact differently depending on the person’s cultural background, to put yourself in other people’s shoes, and to respect their culture and habits.”
