Professor Reiko Tateiwa of the Faculty of Foreign Studies' Department of Hispanic Studies gave her lecture “Festivals in Spain: Light and Dark” at Ashiyagawa College, a lifelong learning organization in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.
During her lecture, Professor Tateiwa introduced the “light and dark” of Spanish history, elaborating on the traditions of Spanish festivals such as the La Tomatina festival, the Christian Holy Week, banned carnivals under the Franco dictatorship due to fear of these events turning into civil uprisings, and the Running of the Bulls festival which also appears in Hemmingway’s “The Sun Also Rises”.
In the full house lecture with 100 attendees, one participant shared how they were glad to finally understand the things they witnessed firsthand during Holy Week when they travelled to Sevilla. There were also questions about the whereabouts of Jews who were exiled from Spain in the end of the 15th century, as well as the Spanish monarchy’s issues with succession.
