On Thursday, June 12: the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies Japanese Studies Center for International Students held the Kyogen Comic Theater Cultural Appreciation Event in the Morita Memorial Hall.

Every academic term, the Center hosts a Cultural Appreciation Event which enables international students to experience various aspects of Japanese culture. For this latest event, three kyogen comic storytellers who have trained as apprentices of the Sengoro Shigeyama family provided a rendition of the tale Bo Shibari (Tied to a Staff). The three performers were Motohiko Shigeyama, Hiromi Shimada and Tatsuya Iguchi. Following the performance, they hosted a workshop for all in attendance, during which they provided demonstrations of kyogen style laughing, crying, and onstage walking technique.
