Digital transformation (Dx) efforts by the Faculty of Global Engagement’s Department of Global Tourism were featured on page 25 of Asahi Shimbun’s morning paper on Monday, October 24th. The article includes an interview with Professor Shigeru Fujimoto, Dean of the Faculty of Global Engagement, as well as an introduction to VR tours that are taught in a cutting-edge course by Professor Eric Hawkinson of the Department of Global Tourism.
The VR tours are made on Google Street View which provides 360-degree views of the streets, by adding links in the imagery that jumps to a page with a description or related video clips of the location. The class is currently considering the introduction of VR tours using goggles. Ever since the coronavirus pandemic began, the class has also tried gathering students in the metaverse to hold classes.
