A virtual event session via Zoom by the Faculty of Foreign Studies’ Department of French Studies was held on Sunday, October 10th, with guest speaker Mr. Akito Mukai. Mr. Mukai (Class of 2003), who currently works as a buyer and product developer at Aeon Topvalu Co., Ltd. and seconded to Palette! Co., Ltd. where he is the head of product strategy.

In the event, Mr. Mukai spoke about how rewarding it is to be a global buyer and product developer, but also shared his personal experiences of how he got there. While he was a student at KUFS, Mr. Mukai studied abroad for a year as an exchange student starting from the fall season during his fourth year. When he came home, he was determined to pursue a career in product development. However, job searching proved to be challenging for Mr. Mukai, as a job seeker who has already graduated college (as opposed to new graduates). He had initially hoped to join a major manufacturer, but he changed his approach and started his career in product logistics to learn about the flow of goods. Then, with his knowledge and experience in logistics, Mr. Mukai switched his career to food purchasing. He traveled around the world using his language skills he acquired at KUFS to develop food products and establish grocery stores with new concepts and styles.

To students starting job hunting, he said, “Stay true to what you really want to do and don’t lose track of your goal. Look beyond big-name companies. There are plenty of interesting jobs behind the jobs that get the spotlight.”

Comments among the students who participated in the event were positive, such as “I know what to do now for my job hunt after listening to how it’s important to pay attention to the lesser known companies that support famous companies”, “It was good for me to know in detail about the role of buyers” and “I felt myself becoming a bit narrow-minded as I began job searching, but hearing him talk made me feel optimistic”.
