A virtual event using Microsoft Teams was held on Tuesday, April 13th, with guest speaker Mr. Isao Yakita (Class of 2006), who is a graduate of the Faculty of Foreign Studies’ Department of Brazilian and Portuguese Studies, and currently an interpreter for a soccer team. Although the webinar was offered before classes of the new academic year began, the event gathered about 20 students, both current and new, as well as faculty and staff. With the Q&A session running past the time it was due to end, the event appeared to be worthwhile for everyone.
Sharing his own experiences as a professional interpreter, Mr. Yakita advised the students to not only focus on the technical aspects of interpreting, but to cherish the time it takes to learn and to take a comprehensive approach toward the study of interpreting.
Thoughts from participants included: “It truly was a great opportunity to listen to things that we normally don’t talk about, like how to take notes while interpreting and how to render what has been said,” and “The webinar was so rich in content that I wish students from other departments could also listen to him speak.”
The Department of Brazilian and Portuguese Studies plans to continue hosting exchanges and seminars, inviting guest speakers who may be KUFS graduates or someone from the outside. Students from other departments would also be welcome to join!
