The Model United Nations co-hosted by our partner university Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and the Model United Nations of the Russian Far East (MUNRFE) was held at KUFS for five days from Thursday, December 5th, to Monday, December 9th, 2019. From our university, Hayato Tanimura, 2nd-year student of the Faculty of Global Engagement’s Department of Global Studies, who has previously attended the Japan University English Model United Nations (JUEMUN), participated in the conference after passing an interview with judges including academic staffs of JUEMUN.

Beginning with a video clip by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the conference was attended by guests from the UN Information Centre in Moscow, the World Bank (a multilateral development bank) in Moscow, and the Consulate-General of Japan in Vladivostok. Before the conference, students from each university attended various programs to educate themselves with information necessary for the debate. Tanimura took on the role of representing the World Bank in Malaysia to utilize his experience from participating in the Community Engagement Program in Malaysia. Despite being in an unfamiliar environment where Tanimura was the only participant from a Japanese university, he managed to take part in every scheduled event.

Tanimura commented, “I was overwhelmed by how high the global standard is – how well-prepared other students were to engage in advanced-level discussions. The Model United Nations in 2020 will be held in Russia, so I wish to give it another try and reach goals that I wasn’t able to this time round. I’m hoping that other KUFS students will join me for the challenge.” Having discovered his own areas of improvement in addition to new goals, the five-day conference seemed to be a fruitful one for this challenger.
