Associate Professor Sachiko Kawakami of Faculty of Global Engagement’s Department of Global Tourism’s project was featured on the January 3rd issue of Japan Times, one of the nation’s major news outlets in English. The article introduced the history of immigration in the Mio district of Mihama-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, the cultures of immigrants that are still practiced today, and the locals’ efforts of passing them onto the next generation.
The article also features current 3rd-year students Tomomi Torii and Miho Ikoma of the Department of Global Tourism who visited the Mio district as part of their Community Engagement Program (CEP) during their 2nd year and researched on the Matsunaga family who has relatives who emigrated to Canada. Even after the program ended, the two students continued to share their knowledge with the locals and researchers from other universities and are also working to share their collective knowledge with the people in Canada.
