On Monday, May 12, three winners of the 25th Chang'an Cup Chinese University Student Japanese Presentation Contest held in Shaanxi Province, China paid a courtesy visit to Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (KUFS) as part of a celebratory trip. The three winning students were Fang Deyuan, Wang Jingyi and Ji Yan, and they visited together with the Xi'an International Studies University president.

KUFS Associate Professor Yang Lei and Assistant Professor Feng Yifeng from the
Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies, along with graduate school students Fan Lujin and Wang Jiaqi, gave a warm welcome to the visitors and provided a pleasant campus tour.

In response to a request from the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Chang'an Cup Chinese University Student Japanese Presentation Contest was founded in 1993 as a speech contest for students of the language in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province—a city with which KUFS has long had deep ties. This long-running competition is a forum for students to compete on the basis of their high level of Japanese language proficiency and high-quality presentations. The level and number of entrants into this contest has risen each year, and as a result the contest has become known for its highly competitive nature.

Ever since the first contest, KUFS has sent personnel to serve as judges, with Professor Hiroko Onishi from the Department of Chinese Studies serving in that capacity at the contest last November.

Following their visit to the campus, the contest winners spent time on a noryoyuka elevated platform to enjoy cool nighttime breezes on the bank of the Kamo River, and then strolled around the neighborhood while enjoying the charming evening townscape of Kyoto. The visit to Kyoto proved to be a highly rewarding experience for all involved, and it will surely motivate them as they continue their studies of the Japanese language.
