Professor Reiko Tateiwa of the Faculty of Foreign Studies' Department of Hispanic Studies gave a lecture titled “The History of Mercury in the World” on Friday, December 9th, as an invited lecturer of Centro de Estudios Orientales, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). She spoke about mercury contamination in 16th-century Spain and Peru, way before the Minamata disease was discovered in Japan.

The lecture was one of the lecture series (via Zoom) hosted by PUCP to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru.

Since Peru is currently experiencing a serious political turmoil and students are unable to study abroad, many students commented how the lecture was very intriguing and educational.
