A book written by President Takeshi Matsuda titled “Why English Now?” was published.
To this date, President Matsuda has spent approximately 60 years of his life with the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. In this modern age when artificial intelligence is increasingly producing higher quality translations, the book addresses the significance and social role of KUFS. As the University’s President, he states that young talents with basic people skills such as observing, active listening, and feeling are what separates people from AI, enabling them to survive in this global age.
The book begins with how President Matsuda studied in an English tutoring school during his elementary and middle school years, his exchanges with an American couple and American veteran during his high school years, and his English Speaking Society activities during his college years – the foundations that led him to develop his original English learning method which he calls “the bulldozer method”. Inviting readers to acquire deep learning experiences in such a short period of time, this method was praised as “a guidepost for English learning that makes you slap your knees and exclaim, ‘Aha!’” Please read this book if you are thinking of learning English once again, or aspiring to work in a country or region where English is spoken.
