The Gion Festival’s Yamaboko Junkō (floats parade) and Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine parade) was conducted this year for the first time in three years. The Gion Festival is a traditional summer event of Kyoto and is one of Japan’s three largest festivals. The Faculty of Global Engagement’s Department of Global Tourism cooperated in the production of the “Gion Festival Official Guidebook” published by the Gion Maturi Yamahoko Association.
With pictures and illustrations, the guidebook explains in detail the history of the floats parade, a chronology of main events, the locations of the floats, parade routes (for both pre-festival and post-festival), and the kinds of floats as well as their structures.
The guidebook is available for purchase in the downtown area where the floats are located for the duration of the festival.
