The January 2020 issue of Enjoy Kyoto, a free magazine in English that introduces Kyoto’s traditionally inherited cultures, featured an article planned and written by four KUFS students on Page 9.
The theme for their fourth article for the magazine was “Reviving Kyoto’s Classic Sandwich.”
Hearing of Kyoto’s unique thick omelet sandwich instead of the common egg salad filling, the four students became excited to introduce this original sandwich to the city’s international guests, and got going on it last December. The team interviewed Mr. Sanshiro Yamazaki, the owner of La Madrague, who recreates the famous egg sandwich that used to be the signature dish of the Western-style restaurant Corona in Kiyamachi of downtown Kyoto, that unfortunately closed its doors a couple years ago. Learning the owner’s story and the difficulties he’s faced, the students managed to write their draft, translate it into English, and submit their writing to the publisher.
All four students are 1st-year students. “We were worried if we could do this right without having our seniors with us.” Reflecting how they held meetings almost every day, they said with beaming faces, “We had about two weeks from our interview until our writing was due for submission. We were on a tight schedule, but we pulled it off with efficiency.”
