2 A satirical biography of Napoleon by two Englishmen

[COMBE, William](Doctor Syntax)& CRUIKSHANK, G[eorge]

The life of Napoleon, a Hudibrastic poem in fifteen cantos

London, 1815.

クームとクルックシャンク『ナポレオンの生涯』

Published in London, this richly bound biography of Napoleon consists of a 15-canto poem by William Combe (1742-1823), who went by the name of Doctor ntax, and 30 colored prints by George Cruikshank (1792-1823). Combe excelled at combined works of poetry and pictures, and he is best known for his illustrated The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque. Cruickshank was, alongside his brother Robert, active as a caricaturist in the 18th and 19th centuries, and he produced illustrations for Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
On the title page, Combe humorously refers to himself simply as Doctor Syntax. This page introduces the reader to its subject with an illustration by Cruikshank showing Napoleon's rise and fall: first climbing proudly up a rope ladder from the island of Corsica, then sitting astride a globe above the French flag, and finally slumped in thought on Saint Helena.
While the first edition of this satirical glish biography of Napoleon was published in 1815, it is thought to have been completed after his final defeat that year at Waterloo.
