| A collection of research works on Japan in Western languages. Of broad historical reach, the collection includes reports by Christian missionaries who visited Japan in the latter half of the 16th Century, studies by Dutch visitors during Japan’s years of national seclusion during the Edo Period, works on Japan by so-called oyatoi-gaikokujin (hired foreigners) Western experts recruited during the Meiji Period after the reopening of Japan to provide instruction in Western practices and technology, and research works by contemporary Japanologists.
