Hello everyone! My name is Ryohei Nakai, and I am a first-year student in the Department of English Studies for Careers. Have you ever heard of the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters? This is a national qualification to provide tourist information in foreign languages to foreign tourists coming from abroad. If you are interested in working with people from overseas using English in the future, this might be the perfect qualification for you.
The other day, I attended a lecture given at KUFS by a person who is currently working as a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter. I am currently studying towards obtaining this certification. Today, I would like to share some information about the presentation with you so that you can learn more about National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters.
1. What is a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter?
National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters are professional tourist guides. Their main job is to accompany foreign tourists and guide them safely through their travels in a foreign language. The number of foreign tourists coming to Japan is expected to continue to increase, and the demand for interpreter guides is also expected to grow. Specific duties include providing information and guidance at tourist information centers, etc., picking up and dropping off visitors at airports and train stations, and assisting with transfers. The speaker said she is motivated when she feels that she can assist her customers enjoy their time in Japan.
2. How do I become a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter?
There are a total of 10 languages for the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters, including English, French and Chinese. In the first stage of testing, the focus is on five subjects: Foreign Languages, Japanese Geography, Japanese History, General Knowledge of Industry, Economy, Politics and Culture (A.K.A. current affairs), and Interpreter Guide Practice. Candidates who pass these five subjects will then take an oral examination related to guiding in Japan.
Some may feel that taking five subjects in the first stage is a high hurdle to clear, but there are ways to lighten the burden a little by obtaining exemptions for some of these subjects. For example, if in advance you can obtain another national qualification known as the Travel Service Supervisor certificate, you can be exempted from taking the Japanese Geography test. This qualification is recommended for those who are considering employment with a travel agency, as it is a very advantageous qualification. By the way, I managed to get this certificate! Another reason why you might be motivated to get this qualification: you may be able to receive a commendation from the President if you pass this test while you are still in school. Other qualifications such as Eiken Grade 1 or a TOEIC score of 900 or above will exempt you from the Foreign Language (English) test. Other exemptions are available, so please check the official website regarding the exam.
If you are at all interested in becoming an interpreter-guide, there are many blogs on the Internet written by people who are currently working as National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters. Let's work together and get certified! Drop me a line!!
