At Open Campus on July 23, I prepared a short lecture on some different gestures that are used by people when they exchange greetings. I chose five common gestures - handshake, bow, wave, hug and kiss, each with some variations. For example, in parts of Europe and the Middle East it is common to kiss on the cheek when meeting friends and relatives. However, in the Middle East, only people of the same sex kiss cheeks. On the other hand, in Europe it is usual for women to kiss each other and men to kiss women, but usually men do not kiss each other as a greeting. I talked a little about the cultures that used different kinds of greeting gestures and the possible origin and meaning of each gesture.

Students participated by listening for key words and filling them in on a handout. Also, they answered questions about customs and their opinions and experiences exchanging greetings in their own culture.

About 15 students attended the first lesson and about ten the second lesson. Most of the students were from Kansai.
