本書は1893（明治27）年にシカゴで開催された万国博覧会時に配布用に作られた京都の英文案内書です。この万博はアメリカ大陸発見400年を記念して開かれたもので、日本は長い歴史を持つ文明国であることを示すため、宇治の平等院鳳凰堂を模した「日本館」を建築して岡倉天心らが選定した美術工芸品を中心に出展しました。 本書は京都を案内する趣旨で編集されたもので、和紙の総袋とじの和本形式で作られています。内容は竹内栖鳳ら京都画壇の巨匠たち16名の木版画が挿入され、巻末には京都の画家や染色・刺繍職人をはじめ、西陣織、縮、漆、扇、七宝、人形、金工、彫刻の分野の名工職人のリストが付されています。
This is an English-language guide to Kyoto produced for distribution at the World’s Colombian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893 (Meiji 26) to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. A Japanese pavilion modeled on the Hōō-dō (Phoenix Hall) at Byōdō-in Temple near Kyoto was built at the fair to demonstrate that Japan was a civilized country with a long history, and this was used to exhibit works of art selected by Okakura Tenshin and others. This guide to Kyoto is made in traditional Japanese double-leaved style, which consists of sheets of washi folded in half along the fore-edge and bound with string at the spine. It contains woodprints by 16 masters of the Kyoto art world, including Takeuchi Seihō, and the back of the book contains a list of Kyoto artists and dyeing and embroidery artisans, along with skilled makers of Nishijin textile, armor, lacquerware, fans, cloisonné ware, dolls, metal ware, sculptures, and engravings.
