(AKIYAMA, Aisaburo)
This is a guidebook to Kyoto written in English for foreigners in Europe and the United States. Not to mention many shrines and temples, more than 100 items of various kinds such as the Imperial Palace, Kaburenjo theater, festivals, and shops are introduced. In addition, many photographs and Ukiyo-e prints of “Dancing Girls Enjoying Cool Breeze on River Kamo” and “Arashiyama” are posted to add color. The author, Aisaburo Akiyama, was a person who studied Japanese culture from a folkloric point of view from the middle of the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Being familiar with English, he published many books in Japanese and English including guidebooks to Kyoto like this one as well as books on Japanese proverbs and rituals. Furthermore, he was also involved in publishing crepe books, many of which are in our university’s collection.
