■ Explanation
Published under the name of Takejiro Hasegawa, this "chirimen-bon" is a calendar with a unified format. Our library has four such calendars for the years 1901 - 1904. It is not known for how many years this series was prepared and published.
Each of the four calendars has two-page spreads for each of the twelve months. The days of the month are shown against the background of superb illustrations. The calendars for the years 1901 - 1903 have different covers but show basically the same scene in the picture for each month. Specifically, the scenes are a New Year's Day snowscape in January, the Inari festival in February, the vernal equinox in March, cherry blossoms in April, wistaria in bloom in May, the rainy season in June, a river opening festival in July, lotus flowers in August, the moonlight in September, the chrysanthemum feast in October, autumn tints in November, and the night market in December (except that, in the 1903 calendar, for the month of October,
the illustration is entitled simply "Chrysanthemum" instead of "Chrysanthemum Feast," and has a slightly different composition). The calendar for 1904 shares a seasonal coloring with the preceding three, but is set apart by a completely different makeup.
The colophon in the 1901 calendar credits Yoshimune Arai as the illustrator, but the calendars for the succeeding three years do not name the illustrator. |
