Laurence Oliphant was something of a celebrity in Britain, having wandered the globe since his youth and becoming well known as a traveler. In 1858, he came to Japan as secretary to Lord Elgin, special envoy charged with concluding a friendly commercial treaty between Britain and Japan, was ennobled, and contributed to the successful concluding of the treaty. Three years later, he returned to Japan as first secretary to the British Legation but was attacked and injured by lordless samurai and returned home after a mere ten days in Japan, lucky to escape with his life.
The original text of this work was published in London in two volumes in 1859, soon after Oliphant returned to England from his first visit to China and Japan as Lord Elgin's secretary. Its title was An account of Lord Elgin's delegation to China and Japan in 1857, 58 and 59. The work was translated into French, Dutch and Italian.
This book is a republication of the second volume, concerned mainly with Japan, of the French translation of both volumes published in 1860 by the French historian Guizot.
