3. Application qualification

Applicants must possess non-Japanese nationality, and fulfil requirements (1) to (3) and either requirement (4) or (5).

  1. Have completed or are scheduled to complete by 20 September 2020 a standard 12-year course curriculum in a country outside Japan, and their qualifications are recognized as sufficient to enter university in their country of study. Any period of study during these 12 years in elementary, Junior or Senior High Schools in Japan must be less than 6 years.
  2. Have been recognized by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies as having qualifications equivalent to or exceeding the qualifications in (1) above.
  3. Be living outside of Japan.
  4. Have taken, in or after April 2018, any of the following exams and are able to provide evidence by the time of application that they have met the requirements detailed below:
    <Applicants whose mother tongue is not English>
    • A score at or above the required score in any of the following tests: TOEIC (L&R): 650 points, TOEIC 4 Skills 1390 points, TOEFL iBT61, TOEFL Junior 828 points, IELTS 5.0
    <Applicants whose mother tongue is English>
    • A score at or above the required score in any of the following tests: TOEIC (L&R): 750 points, TOEIC 4 Skills 1535 points, TOEFL iBT 68, TOEFL Junior 840 points, IELTS 5.5. OR have been recognized by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies as having an equivalent qualification to those above
  5. Have been recognized by Kyoto University of Foreign Studies as having reached a level equivalent to or exceeding those detailed in (4) above

* The TOEIC 4 Skills score is the total obtained by adding the TOEIC (S&W) score multiplied by 2.5 to the TOEIC (L&R) score

4. Screening process

The decision on an application will made based on assessment of the theme essay (to be written in English) that applicants are asked to write, the results of IELTS or other English language tests (native speakers of English are exempted from this), and an overall assessment of the application documents submitted.

5. Results announcement

Our university will inform all the applicants in date of results in the entrance examination by EMS.
The results are not announced on the University homepage.
The University will answer no questions about the results of entrance admission by telephone, post, e-mail etc.

6. Admission examination fee

Please pay ¥20,000 (Japanese yen) by credit card.
Accepted credit cards: VISA, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay Ginren

* The name on the card does not need to be the name of the applicant.
* Examination fees that have already been paid will not be refunded.

Steps to Admission

Application

Applicants

  1. 1Check the "Documents to be Submitted".
  2. 2Online registration: Create your "My Account" through "Internet Application System".
    My Account can be registered as early as 10 days prior to the first day of applications.
  3. 3Apply through "Internet Application System".
  4. 4Send the documents by post. [ Under no circumstances will applications be accepted after the deadline ]
  5. 5Make a payment of Application Fee (¥20,000) through "Internet Application System".

* Applicants will receive an email from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies when the necessary data entries are completed and the fee is paid. Make sure your email setting accepts messages sent from the "kufs.ac.jp".

KUFS

  1. 6Application Review・Notification of Results
    The applicant will be notified of the admission decision by email on the day of the Announcement of Results.
    Inquiries regarding the admission decision by phone, mail, or email will not be responded in any case.

* If you are already staying in Japan, KUFS does not take these procedures. The applicant needs to apply for their Certificate of Eligibility by themselves at a Regional Immigration Bureau.

Admission Fee Exemption System

This is a system through which applicants with excellent results in tests designated by the University are exempted from the admission fee (an amount equivalent to the admission fee will be refunded after admission). Students who achieve any of the required levels detailed in the table below are eligible.

Applicants whose mother tongue is English The required score in any of the following tests: TOEIC (L&R) 945 points of above, TOEIC 4 Skills 1845 points or above, TOEFL iBT 95 points or above IELTS 7.0 or above
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English The required score in any of the following tests: TOEIC (L&R) 835 points or above, TOEIC 4 Skills 1670 points or above, TOEFL iBT 80 points or above, Cambridge English PET 168 points or above, Cambridge English FCE 168 points or above, IELTS 6.0 or above.

Note: The application for the Admission Fee Exemption must be made at the time of application.
Applications not made at time will not be considered.
The TOEIC 4 Skills score is the total obtained by adding the TOEIC (S&W) score multiplied by 2.5 to the TOEIC (L&R) score
