Because of the complex and diverse nature of environmental issues, chosen topic areas may not only include purely environmentally-themed content, but also social, economic, and indeed, political content.
Class work will be carried out in English.
All thesis and project students must produce a clear thesis statement and research proposal that will need the teacher's approval. Through their research, students must prepare a thesis or project that clearly demonstrates a good understanding of their chosen topic area. This will include providing a clear anaylsis of the research undertaken, including evidence of how their topic area relalates to other key topics and issues.
Students will also need to produce a research journal that will provide a clear record of their research, and include notes on their progress, problems encountered, and tasks planned for making progress with their work in the weeks ahead.
All materials to be submitted by the sudents will need to be fully referenced with a bibliography and in-text citations that should be formatted under APA rules for writing academic papers.
All students will also need to present their research findings to the class.
To do well on this course you need to have an active interest in issues related to environmental issues and sustainable development. This in turn will help give you the background knowledge needed to help you critically examine and research your chosen topic and the important connections it has with other topic areas.
It will be important therefore to regularly read news articles from the Internet sites of newspapers such as The Guardian or The New York Times, or news sites such as the BBC.
