みなさんこんにちは。グローバル観光学科4年次生の河原のどかです。約1週間あったGWの休講期間、みなさんはどのように過ごされましたか？
今回は英字フリーペーパー「ENJOY KYOTO」の発行をメインに、note、Instagram、YouTubeを通して京都の魅力を発信する団体、ALKOTTOでの活動についてお伝えします。ENJOY KYOTOさんと京都外大の取り組みは、なんと8年目に及びます。これまでの活動についてはぜひこちら をご覧ください。
2025年4月に新しい紙面を発行し、5月14日（水）のお昼休みに完成記念イベントを行いますので、そちらについてもお知らせしますね。
2024年度の紙面テーマは日本文化の根本ともいうべき、茶道、華道、香道の「三つの道」を取り上げました。みなさんはいずれかの「道」のお稽古などを経験したことはありますか？受け継がれてきた伝統文化が100年先、200年先も継承されるためにはどのようにすべきか、という視点で取材、執筆しました。
まずは華道。華道家元である池坊の次世代を担う若き華道家、池坊専宗さんに取材しました。30代という若さでありながら、華道家と写真家の二足のわらじをこなし、まさに次世代の華道を担っていく存在として活躍されています。取材日にはALKOTTOのメンバーが専守さん直々にいけばなの指導をしていただきました。
次に香道です。京都で250年以上に店舗を構える山田松香木店さんのご協力のもと、志野流香道二十一世家元継承者の蜂谷宗苾さんに取材しました。日本各地だけでなく、グローバルにお香の文化を伝える宗苾さんに香の精神を教えていただきました。また、お香の順番と種類を当てる「組香」を体験させていただきました。
そして茶道です。京都外国語大学でも講義をしていただいている、武者小路千家家元教授の木津宗詮先生に取材しました。茶道の心をご自身の経験談とともに、お伝えしていただきました。取材日には、お茶のお点前のご指導をしていただきました。
番外編ではありますが、書家の川尾朋子さんにリモートで取材に応えていただきました。川尾さんの作品といえば、JR京都駅にある「京都」はみなさんも目にしたことがあるかもしれません。とても迫力のある作品を制作され、世界的に活躍されています。取材内容はnoteで掲載予定です。
紙面では英文と写真を掲載していますが、紙面に載せきれなかったこぼれ話や写真、動画は日本語を中心にnote、YouTube、Instagramにて発信予定です。ぜひみなさんチェックしてみてください。

Greetings, everyone! My name is Nodoka Kawahara, and I am a second-year student in the Global Tourism program at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. Today, I’d like to share a report on the latest activities of ALKOTTO.
ALKOTTO is the organization behind the English-language free paper ENJOY KYOTO, and we also promote Kyoto’s unique attractions through Note, Instagram, and YouTube. You can visit these platforms to explore our past activities in more detail.
In April 2025, we published a new edition of our free paper, focusing on three classical arts—Sadō (tea ceremony), Kadō (flower arrangement), and Kōdō (incense ceremony)—which can be considered the foundations of traditional Japanese culture. Have you ever experienced any of these “three ways”? In this issue, we explored how these traditions are being passed down and preserved for the next 100 or even 200 years.
Firstly, let's look at Kadō, or flower arranging. We interviewed Mr. Senshu Ikenobo, the successor and grandmaster of the Ikenobō school of ikebana. Although in his 30s, he balances two careers—as a master of ikebana and as a photographer. On the day of the interview, ALKOTTO members had the rare opportunity to learn ikebana directly from him.
Next, let's look at Kōdō. With the cooperation of Yamadamatsu Incense Company, which has had a store in Kyoto for over 250 years, we interviewed Mr. Souhitsu Hachiya, the 21st grandmaster of the Shino school of incense. Mr. Hachiya, who has shared the spirit of incense both in Japan and abroad, introduced us to the essence of kōdō and guided us through a traditional incense-comparing game (kumikō).
And then there is tea ceremony, or Sadō. We interviewed Mr. Sousen Kizu, professor of Mushanokoji Senke, who also lectures at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. He generously shared his experiences and insights into the spirit of tea, and he also taught us the basic procedures of the tea ceremony on the day of our visit.
As an extra feature, we asked calligrapher Ms. Tomoko Kawao to respond to our interview remotely. You may recognize her powerful calligraphy work titled “Kyoto” displayed at JR Kyoto Station. She is internationally active, and her interview will be published on our Note channel.
We’ll be sharing more stories, photos, and videos—mainly in Japanese—that didn’t make it into the printed paper via our digital platforms. Please be sure to check them out:

Finally, we are excited to invite you to our completion party for the new edition! It will be held on Wednesday, May 14, during the lunch break around the main staircase on the first floor of Building 4. We’ll be displaying previous editions of the paper and hosting a roundtable discussion with snacks, drinks, and fun games. If you're interested, please come and join us!
