みなさん、こんにちは！グローバル観光学科3年次生の河原のどか、山下空真、廣田歩夢、岩本茉子です。8月も後半に突入しましたが、夏休みは満喫中でしょうか？京都外国語大学では8月2・3・4日の３日間、オープンキャンパスが開催されました。暑いなか、京都外大に興味をもってくださった多くの方が、足を運んでくださいました！改めて、ありがとうございました。オープンキャンパスなどをきっかけに、「大学ではどんな授業をするのだろう？」と、興味をもっている方も多いのではないでしょうか？そこで、今回のブログでは「グローバル観光学科1年次生の授業」というテーマでお届けしたいと思います。今回は、様々な授業の中から4つの授業についてご紹介していきます。それぞれの特徴やどんなことを学べるのか簡単にまとめてみました！
①「観光学A」 | 原先生
グローバル観光学科に入学して、最初に観光について学ぶ授業がこの授業です。観光とは何か改めて言葉の定義の確認や、観光がもたらすメリットデメリット両方などを学習していきます。この授業を通してこれから学習していく観光についての基礎を身につけることができました。
②「京都の文化と歴史」 | 村山先生
京都といえば、抹茶、舞妓さん、神社仏閣などをイメージする方が多いでしょう。ただ、京都の魅力はそれだけではないのです。本授業では建築、伝統工芸、京料理、行事など京都文化のあらゆる要素を学び、「京都らしさ」とはなにかを考えます。京都で学ぶ大学生として必要な知識が学べ、京都での生活に深みが増すでしょう。
ここからは、デジタル関連の授業を２つご紹介していきます。近年、デジタル技術の発達により、身の回りは情報で溢れています。そのため、私たちは情報の見極めや責任をもつことがとても重要となってきます。以下の２つの授業では、それらについて学ぶことができます。
③「データ科学」 | 李先生
みなさんはChat GPT など生成AIを使ったことはありますか？生成AIには、メリットやデメリットがありますが、それらを実際に使うことができる授業がこの「データ科学」です。実はこの授業は、今年度入学した１年次生からカリキュラムが変わったことにより、新たに導入された授業です。１年次生に聞いたことによると、主な授業内容はオープンデータについての調査や、ChatGPT・Google Gemini・deepl・microsoft copilot等の生成AIを使って感想をまとめるそうです。また、基本的にはAIを使ったり、統計データを分析します。
④「Digital Literacy」 | ハーキンソン先生
この授業では、現代生活におけるテクノロジーの重要な観点を学んでいきます。例えば、インターネット検索による効率的な情報探しや、コンピュータ・サイエンスの基礎も学び、コンピュータがどのように動作するかについての基本的な理解も深めます。また、デジタル環境においてスピードと正確性が求められる、タイピングテクニックについてのスキルも学びます。さらに、人工知能がどのようにテキスト、画像、音楽などの新しいコンテンツを作成できるかを探求する、生成AIとその応用も紹介します。つまり、この授業を通じて、今後のテクノロジー主導の社会にとってますます重要になってくる、デジタルリテラシーの基礎を身につけることができます。

Hello, everyone! We are Nodoka Kawahara, Sorama Yamashita, Ayumu Hirota, and Mako Iwamoto, third-year students in the Department of Global Tourism. As we enter the second half of August, how is your summer vacation going?
Kyoto University of Foreign Studies held an open campus event for three days from August 2 to 4. Many prospective students braved the heat to visit our campus, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who attended!
Open campus events are great opportunities to learn about university life, and many of you might be curious about the classes offered here. So, the theme of this blog is “Classes for First-Year Students in the Department of Global Tourism.” We will introduce four courses and summarize their key characteristics and what you can expect to learn from them.
1. “Tourism Studies” | Prof. Hara
This class is the first introduction to tourism that students encounter after joining the Department of Global Tourism. You’ll learn the definition of "tourism" and explore both its advantages and disadvantages. Through this class, I gained a solid foundation in tourism, which will be essential for my studies going forward.
2. “Kyoto Culture and History” | Prof. Murayama
When most people think of Kyoto, they probably imagine matcha green tea, maiko (apprentice geisha), and the city’s famous shrines and temples. However, Kyoto’s attractions go far beyond these. In this class, you’ll delve into all aspects of Kyoto culture, including architecture, traditional crafts, cuisine, and local events, while considering what truly defines “Kyoto-ness.” This course equips you with essential knowledge for studying in Kyoto, making your experience here even more enriching. Next, we’d like to introduce two classes that focus on digital skills. In recent years, with the rapid development of digital technology, we’re surrounded by vast amounts of information. It’s crucial for us to become discerning and responsible users of this information, and these next two classes will help you do just that.
3. “Data Science” | Prof. Li
Have you ever used Generative AI tools like ChatGPT? Generative AI has its pros and cons, and understanding them is part of the "Data Science" course. This course, newly introduced for first-year students this year as part of a curriculum update, focuses on exploring open data and using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, DeepL, and Microsoft Copilot. Students will analyze data using these tools and formulate their own conclusions. The course provides hands-on experience with Generative AI and statistical data analysis.
4. “Digital Literacy” | Prof. Hawkinson
In this class, students gain crucial insights into the role of technology in modern life. You’ll learn how to search the internet efficiently, understand the basics of computer science, and develop a fundamental grasp of how computers work. Additionally, the course covers typing techniques that emphasize speed and accuracy in a digital environment. You’ll also explore the applications of Generative AI and how it can create new content, including text, images, and music. By the end of this class, you’ll have a solid foundation in digital literacy, an increasingly important skill in our technology-driven society.
