皆さんこんにちは！グローバル観光学科3年次生の廣田歩夢です。日々の気温の上昇はもちろん、買い物へ行くとBGMが祇園祭のお囃子の音に変化していることや、好きなメロンを使った製品につい手が伸びてしまうなど様々な観点から夏の到来を実感しています。今回のブログでは公開から長年愛されている「オペラ座の怪人」を鑑賞する機会があったので改めて作品の紹介や感想を共有していきます。以下の文章にはあらすじなどから劇中のヒントや軽いネタバレが含まれる場合がありますので、今後まっさらな気持ちで作品に触れたいと考えている人はご注意ください。

この作品は1988年に劇団四季による日本公演が始まり、劇団四季によると、これまでの総観客動員数は約790万人、通算上演数は歴代3位の約8000回を誇っている大作です。ミュージカルで有名なオペラ座の怪人ですが実は映画も公開されており、今回は映画公開20周年を記念した復刻版を鑑賞しました。

まずは作品のあらすじを紹介します。冒頭の物語は、オークション会場にて車いすに座った老人が大事そうにオルゴールを手に入れ、それに向かって語りかけるところから始まります。そして666番、シャンデリアにかけられた幕が外され、シャンデリアのスイッチを入れるとそれまで白黒だったシーンにあのパイプオルガンの音とともに色が付き始めて回想シーンへと切り替わり、『ハンニバル』のリハーサルまで遡ります。リハーサル中に起きた事故を受けて主演女優の代役を務めることになったのがクリスティーヌでした。異例の大抜擢を受けた彼女は初舞台を大成功に収めました。終演後彼女はこれまで歌のレッスンをしてくれた“音楽の天使”に感謝の気持ちを伝えます。幼馴染でオペラ座のスポンサーとなったラウルが彼女の楽屋を訪れると彼女の姿が消えていました。“音楽の天使”ことファントムはクリスティーヌをさらに舞台へ立たせたいという要求を強める一方、ラウルら経営陣がこれに従わないためファントムは、シャンデリアを落下させ更なる事故を発生させてしまいました。この事故以降、クリスティーヌを舞台の主演をさせ自らが作曲したいと考えるファントムと、クリスティーヌを守ることを決めたラウルとの対決が始まっていきます。

次に感想です。まず映画冒頭から心を掴まれっぱなしでした。理由は音楽のよさはもちろん、キャンドルに火が付くことで老人の回想シーンに入り、それがきっかけでそれまで白黒であった風景に色が付く映画ならではの場面転換術に圧巻されたためです。そして白黒の現代シーンとカラーの回想シーンの切り替えを通して先程の老人がラウルであると分かったとき自らもラウル目線に立つことができ少し涙腺が緩みました。だからこそ終盤ラウルが購入したオルゴールを今は亡きクリスティーヌのお墓にお供えをしたことで作品では描かれていない出来事が一気に駆け巡りました。さらにこれまでそのひどい容姿から一人地下で生きていたファントムがクリスティーヌからのキスをもらった瞬間に胸が締め付けられ、その後のファントムの行動は涙なしで見ることが出来ませんでした。そしてラウルがオルゴールを置いたお墓の横にはおそらくファントムが置いたと考えられる“一輪の赤いバラ”で最後にもう一度胸が締め付けられました。

長く愛される作品はそれだけ感動するポイントが多く込められていることが分かりました。映画を通して作品の全体の流れが分かったので今後は、劇団四季による日本語バージョンだけでなく本場ロンドンでの英語バージョンのミュージカルも絶対に見たいと思います。

Hello everyone! I’m Ayumu Hirota, a third-year student in the Department of Global Tourism. With summer's arrival, I’m not only feeling the daily increase in temperature but also noticing the change in background music to the sound of the Gion festival at the supermarket and the tendency to reach for melon-flavored products, as melons are my favorite fruit.

Recently, I had the opportunity to watch The Phantom of the Opera, a beloved classic since its release, and I’d like to share my impressions of the work. Please be aware that the following text may contain hints and light spoilers, so proceed with caution if you want to experience the work with fresh eyes.

According to the Shiki Theatre Company, The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by about 7.9 million people across roughly 8,000 performances, making it their third most-performed work. Although it is famous as a musical, there is also a movie version. I watched the re-released edition of the movie, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its release.

First, let me introduce the film's synopsis. The story begins with an old man in a wheelchair at an auction house, holding a music box and speaking to it. When the auctioneer introduces lot 666, a chandelier, the curtain covering is removed, and the chandelier is lit. The black-and-white scene transitions into a colored reminiscence scene with the well-known sound of the pipe organ, taking us back to a rehearsal of Hannibal. Following an accident during rehearsals, Christine is chosen to fill in for the lead actress. Her first performance is a great success. After the performance, she expresses her gratitude to the Angel of Music who has been giving her singing lessons. When Raoul, a childhood friend and sponsor of the opera house, visits her dressing room, she is gone. The Phantom, the Angel of Music, demands that Christine perform on stage more prominently, but Raoul and the rest of the management refuse to comply. This leads the Phantom to drop the chandelier, causing another accident. Following this, a confrontation begins between the Phantom, who wants Christine to star on stage and sing his compositions, and Raoul, who is determined to protect her. Next, my impressions. From the beginning of the movie, I was captivated.

The music, of course, was fantastic, but I was also impressed by the unique way scenes transitioned, with the old man's recollections triggered by the lighting of candles, turning black-and-white scenes into colorful ones. When I realized that the old man was Raoul, the transition between modern black-and-white scenes and colorful reminiscence scenes allowed me to empathize with Raoul, bringing tears to my eyes. This emotional connection made the ending, where Raoul offers the music box to Christine's grave, even more poignant. The moment when the Phantom, who had been living alone in the basement due to his disfigured appearance, received a kiss from Christine was heart-wrenching, and I couldn't watch his subsequent actions without crying. The final scene, with a “single red rose” placed by the Phantom next to Christine's grave, moved me to tears once again. After watching the movie, I realized that a work beloved for so long contains many moving elements. Now that I understand the entire flow of the story, I definitely want to see the English version of the musical in London as well as the Japanese version by the Shiki Theatre Company.
