こんにちは、グローバル観光学科2年次生の横田藍子です。今回は私が参加している活動について紹介したいと思います。

さて、『ENJOY KYOTO』というフリーペーパーを知っていますか？『ENJOY KYOTO』は京都を訪れる、または京都に在住している外国人に向けて作成された京都について発信しているフリーペーパーです。このフリーペーパーの一面を学科の村山弘太郎先生や実際に『ENJOY KYOTO』の製作スタッフの皆様のご指導のもと、私たち京都外国語大学の学生で作成させてもらっています。

紙面作りは、自分たちでどんな京都を発信するのかについて話し合うテーマ決めから始まります。テーマが決まれば何を取材するのかを考え、取材先を決めたら実際にアポ取りも自分たちで行います。そして、取材したことをまとめて、記事を作成していきます。はじめは日本語で原稿を書き、確認できたら次は英語に翻訳し、ネイティブチェックをしてもらいます。最終確認が終わったら入稿となります。

こうしてフリーペーパーの一面を学生の手で作り上げます。テーマがなかなか決まらない時などたくさん行き詰まる場面がありました。また取材先の方とやり取りをするのにメールの書き方を学んだり、電話で話すのにすごく緊張したりする経験もしました。どうしたらより多くの外国人に伝わるのかについて試行錯誤し、文章を考えました。翻訳をするときは記事で使われる英語の言い回しなどを教えていただきました。

意外と難しいなと感じたのが題名を考えることです。タイトルでどれだけ興味を引けるのか、内容を伝えられるのかがとても難しかったです。このように、『ENJOY KYOTO』の活動を通して、京都のことを深く知れるだけでなく、社会に出て必要なことも学ぶことができました。

現在は11月号が発行されています。この11月号は以前から交流のあった京都芸術大学の学生さんとの共同プロジェクトとして進めてきました。京都芸術大学のWhole Love Kyotoという団体では、古いものと今を掛け合わせた新たなアイテムの制作や、伝統工芸品を手掛ける職人さんたちによるオンラインワークショップを開催しています。

今回はそのオンラインワークショップを『ENJOY KYOTO』でも発信しようということで、「桐箱」をテーマに記事を書いています。これに伴って1月号に向けて新たなテーマ決めも始まっています。アイデアとしては「色」にフォーカスし、そこからどのように掘り下げていくかブレインストーミングを行いました。これから企画を考え、新しい1年次生とともに1月号に向け、活動していきます。そこでの新たな出会いや機会、繋がりを大切にしてこれからも取り組んでいきたいと思います。


Hello! I am Aiko YOKOTA. I belong to the Department of Global Tourism Studies, the Faculty of Global Engagement as a sophomore. Today, I introduce about the activity that I take part in. Have you seen the articles of “ENJOY KYOTO”?

"ENJOY KYOTO" is a free magazine that contains articles about Kyoto for foreign people who live in Kyoto or those people who visit Kyoto. The students of Kyoto University of Foreign Studies have participated in making a part of this free magazine under the guidance of Prof. Koutaro MURAYAMA and the staff of "ENJOY KYOTO."

When we create an article, we usually start from deciding an article theme thinking what we want to tell about Kyoto. After deciding the theme, we plan what we want to interview about. After that, we actually make an appointment with a person we interview for ourselves. Next, we write an article based on the interview. After we write a Japanese draft, and a professional writer checks it. We then translate it into English, and a native checker checks our English. After all these processes, we finally send our manuscript for printing.

In this way, we students make a part of the free magazine. There have been many situations coming to a deadlock. For example, when we faced the situation where we couldn’t decide our theme. But we also learned new things such as how to write e-mail when we contacted with people who we interviewed and talked by telephone. We were very nervous. We repeated trials and errors thinking how we can tell things more clearly for many foreign people. When we translate our article into English, we learned different ways of speaking English. Unexpectedly, it was difficult to come up with catchy titles. It was very difficult to create a title that draws readers’ attention as well as delivers the content. Through involving the activity of ENJOY KYOTO, we could learn not only about Kyoto but also skills that are needed in society.

Now, the latest issue No.11 was published. It was proceeded as a joint project with the students of Kyoto University of the Art. A student initiative called “Whole Love Kyoto”from Kyoto University of the Art produces items that are mixed with old and new things. It holds online workshops with crafts-persons making traditional craft objects. This time, we are planning to feature these workshops in ENJOY KYOTO. The theme is “kiribako.” It means a box of paulownia wood. In addition, we have started to decide a new theme for a next article in January. We will focus on “color” and already did some brainstorming about how we write it. For this next issue, we will work with new freshman students. I look forward to new meetings, chances and connections that ENJOY KYOTO brings into my life.
