Hello! My name is Naoko Ishibashi. I belong to the Department of Global Tourism Studies as a freshman. I joined Ootsumaturi to help pull the rope of festival car on October 13th. Ootsumatsuri is Tenson shrine’s festival in Ootsu city. It is a famous festival with a history of more than 400 years. We pull portable shrines that are used in festivals of Japan. The Japanese name is Hikiyama. It is laden with a mechanical doll, and we cruise the city while moving the doll. This festival is a little similar to Gionmatsuri, which is a famous festival in Kyoto.

We got together after seven in the morning and received an explanation. We started pulling the festival car from around eight o’clock. We walked along the south side of the city while taking a break on the way. There were many narrow streets and slopes, so it was hard to go through the street corner and downhill.

After lunch break, we walked on the north side of the city. There were few tourists in the morning, but in the afternoon, the number of tourists increased. Chimaki (Amulet to ward off evil) and original towels were sprinkled from the top of the float. Locals and tourists picked them up. During the festival, festival music was on, and tourists were excited. The whole city was surrounded by a bright atmosphere.

As I walked a very long distance, I was very tired after the festival. But I also felt that it was worth doing. I had a lot of fun! If you have never been to Ootsumatsuri, please come next year. I’m sure you'll enjoy it.
