皆さんこんにちは！グローバル観光学科1年次生の吉田琳香です。クリスマスが近づき、街中がクリスマスの装飾や音楽が流れていてワクワクしてきます。さて、12月4日から12月10日まで、人権週間でしたが、京都外国語大学でも人権啓発行事を開催していました。私はその中の一つ、日本を代表するゴスペルシンガーのHanna Bunyaさんによるゴスペルコンサート＆人権に関するトークショーを観てきました。

Hanna Bunyaさんは、大阪府出身で、幼い頃からゴスペルに触れてきました。そして16歳でアメリカに渡り、モアヘッド大学を卒業しました。その後、パキスタン大使館勤務を経てジョージワシントン大学院修了し、カーネギーホールでの日米親善コンサートやスイス全国ツアーを行なっていました。現在はゴスペルシンガーとしてだけでなく、コメンテーターや近畿大学の英語講師としても活躍しています。

今回のコンサートでは、人権をテーマにゴスペルの歴史と成り立ちから、本当の自分を見つける方法についてお話ししてくださいました。ゴスペルとは、キリスト教プロテスタント系の宗教音楽と黒人音楽が融合したものです。奴隷としてアメリカ大陸に連れてこられたアフリカ人は、言語や宗教を奪われ、死ぬまで労働を強いられていました。そのような生活の中でプロテスタントの賛美歌に出会い、彼らの生活の癒し、生きがいとなりました。その後ゴスペルはジャズやR&Bなど、多くのジャンルに影響を与えました。私はゴスペルのことを「天使にラブ・ソングを」で知りましたが、このような歴史があったことを知りませんでした。

また、ドラマーのマーティー・ブレイシーさんもスペシャルゲストとしてお話してくださいました。マーティーさんはアメリカ出身のドラマーです。マーティーさんは幼い時から音楽に触れてきましたが、アメリカ空軍での経歴があります。なぜ今ドラマーとして活躍しているのかをお話ししてくださいました。Hannaさんもマーティーさんも多様な経歴をお持ちです。そんなお二人が、「壁にぶつかった時こそ本当の自分に出会える、たくさん挑戦してみることが大切」と言われたことが一番印象に残りました。私はこの言葉を聞いて、失敗を恐れるのではなく、積極的に挑戦して本当の自分を見つけていこうと感じました。

今回のコンサートでは、Pharrell WilliamsのHappyやアメイジンググレイス、Hannaさんのオリジナルソングも歌ってくださいました。さらにダンサーさんのソロステージもあり、ダイナミックなダンスから優雅なダンスを披露してくださいました。そして、グレイテストショーマンの"This is Me"では"Mrs. GREEN APPLES"の振り付けを担当したAsamiさんがこの日のためにオリジナルのダンスを作ってきてくれました。今回は京都外国語大学の学生も参加して踊ることができました。観客席でもできる振り付けを用意してくださり、ステージと一体となって楽しむことができました。

Hannaさんのパワフルで心に響く歌声と、プロダンサーさんと演奏者たちによるパフォーマンスでとても楽しむことができました。また、改めて人権と自分のことについてよく考えることができた貴重な機会でした。2022年はあと少しで終わりますが2023年に向けて、本当の自分のやりたいことは何か考えてみるのはいかがでしょうか。

Hello everyone! This is Rinka Yoshida, and I am a first-year student in the Department of Global Tourism. Christmas is approaching, and I am excited to see the Christmas decorations and hear the festive music playing in the streets.

It was Human Rights Week from December 4 to December 10, and Kyoto University of Foreign Studies held human rights educational events to mark the week. I attended one event, a gospel concert and talk show on human rights by Hanna Bunya, a well-known Japanese gospel singer.

Hanna Bunya was born in Osaka and was exposed to gospel music from an early age. When she was 16 years old, she moved to the U.S. and graduated from Morehead University. After working at the Pakistani Embassy, she completed her graduate studies at George Washington Graduate School of Music and performed at Carnegie Hall at Japan-US friendship concerts, as well as taking her singing voice on tour all over Switzerland. She is currently active not only as a gospel singer but also as a commentator and an English instructor at Kinki University.

In this concert, she talked about the history and origins of gospel music and what she called the REAL YOU under the theme of human rights.

Gospel is a combination of Christian (Protestant) hymns and music with African-American roots. Africans who were brought to the Americas as slaves were stripped of their language and religion and forced to work until they died. During this time, they encountered Protestant hymns, which became a source of healing and motivation for their lives. Later, gospel music influenced many genres such as jazz and R&B. I knew about gospel music through the film Sister Act but I had no idea about its long history.

The drummer, Marty Bracy, also spoke as a special guest. Marty is from the United States and he had been exposed to music since he was a child. He has also served in the U.S. Air Force. He told how he came to be a drummer.

Both Hanna and Marty have diverse backgrounds. I was most impressed by what they both said: it is when you hit a wall that you can find your true self, and it is important to challenge yourself a lot. I heard these words　and, I sensed that instead of being afraid of failure, I need to actively challenge myself and thus find my true self.

They sang "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, "Amazing Grace", and one of Hanna's original songs. There was also a solo performance by a dancer featuring dynamic and graceful moves. Asami, who choreographed "Mrs. GREEN APPLES" for "This is Me" from "The Greatest Showman", created an original dance for this event.　Students from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies also participated in the dance. They prepared a routine that could be performed in the audience seats as well, and we were able to enjoy it in unison with the performers on stage.

I enjoyed Hanna's powerful and inspiring voice. The event was well by professional dancers and the other performances. It was also a valuable opportunity for me to think about human rights again. 2022 is almost over. How about thinking about what you really want to do in 2023?
