2021/06/16 15:20:00 SDGs Badges from Kyoto Japan

To raise greater awareness of the UN's sustainable development goals (https://sdgs.un.org/goals), Kyoto City and Minorinomori, Kyoto NPO (https://minorinomori.com) collaborated to create their own SDGs badges.

Because the UN badges with the 17 SDGs' goals were out of stock, Minorinomori made its own badges out of local wood and partnered with welfare facilities to work on them. In this way, they helped realize the principles relating to the environment and welfare contained in the 17 SDGs. Additionally, a portion of badge sales are used to support the welfare facilities and to improve overall welfare. To learn more and buy badges, please visit https://minorinomori.base.ec/about.

To create greater awareness and support sales, JUEMUN KUFS organizer and GS student, Manami Miyatake took initiative and arranged for the purchase of the SDG badges for all JUEMUN delegates. Further, Manami also recently launched sampai, an upcycling SDG-based brand that uses industrial waste from the traditional garment industries. Great job Manami. Please check it out!!

On Friday, April 16, 2021, the Department of Global Studies (DGS) hosted a new student welcome event in preparation for the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. Unlike any other, a special interactive hybrid program was developed during the pandemic to bring new students into the DGS, allowing them to meet and interconnect faculty, administrative staff and senpai students. The program included opening remarks by the DGS Chair, Prof. Aaron Campbell and other faculty members from DGS, the Hult Prize Presentation (Onigiri), and an introduction to navigating the school language center services and NINJA.

Following the break, the students were divided into four groups and discussed in each of the breakout rooms. Discussion Forums enabled new students to discuss topics of mutual interest with their peers.

At the end of the event, the senpai divided the new students into eight groups and led them on a campus field tour.

There was some drizzle in the morning, but it cleared up by the end, making it a great way to start the new school year!

Dear DGS students,

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 2020~2021 academic year! Whether you are a new or returning student, we are happy that you have chosen to work with us in pursuing your degree in Global Studies at KUFS.

Global Studies is a broad and dynamic field that addresses the world’s most pressing challenges. Issues like climate change and globalization are some of the most important forces shaping our world in the 21st century. And now, we suddenly find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. This event is causing profound changes to social life as we know it, while serious economic challenges are still to follow.

As was just recently announced, classes will begin online on Thursday, May 7th and continue online until it is safe to return to campus. I can assure you that all faculty and staff are working around the clock preparing to deliver our courses online using the latest educational technologies available. We’ll be employing a Learning Management System called Manaba, using Microsoft Teams for real-time video conferencing and project management, as well as taking advantage of other tools for screencasting, collaborative document creation, file sharing, and audio and video streaming. We will do our best to make sure you get the most out of your online DGS experience.

But just because we all may be sheltering at home, doesn’t mean we cannot continue to build a tight-knit academic community. That all starts with good communication. Use LINE, email, and social media to communicate regularly with your classmates. And reach out to your professors and academic advisors, who are happy to help you with your questions and feedback. Our virtual doors are open!

Again, I am honored to welcome you to this new academic year. I want you to know that we are all thrilled to serve your academic needs.

Sincerely yours,

Aaron P Campbell
