The National Model United Nations (NMUN) was held from November 23rd-26th in the Portopia Hotel, Kobe. NMUN is one of the oldest and most prestigious intercollegiate MUN conferences and is held annually in New York City, Washington, D.C., and an international location. This year NMUN was hosted by Kobe City University of Foreign Studies and over 320 student delegates from 44 universities and 12 countries attended the conference. Four students and two faculty from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies participated, representing the country of Iceland in the General Assembly (GA) and Non-Nuclear Proliferation Committee (NPT).
The Opening Ceremony included a video message from the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and a letter of greeting from Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Following the ceremony students participated in a Peace Forum moderated by Tetsuo Kondo, United Nations Development Program, with presentations by Yumiko Horie, Director of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns for Save the Children Japan; Hiroe Ono, Senior Deputy Director for Middle East and Europe, JICA; and Koji Yanai, Group Senior Executive Officer and Director of the Board, Fast Retailing Co., LTD.
A special greeting was given by Professor Halyna Protsyk, Ukrainian Catholic University, who spoke about the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the displacement of people, and the constant threat of missiles and bombs. Setsuko Thurlow, a Hiroshima Atomic Bomb survivor and a representative of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons also sent a presentation entitled: Nuclear War or Non-Nuclear Peace? The need to make an educated choice.
The four participating KUFS students divided into two committees and proceeded to represent Iceland during the speeches, discussions, negotiations, resolution drafting, and debates. Ayane Maekawa (Global Studies) and Ryo Nakatsuji (Global Studies) joined the discussions in the General Assembly, while Eita Shimakura (British and American Studies) and Ken Torito (Global Studies) joined the Non-Nuclear Proliferation Treaty committee. Professor Ian Gibson (British and American Studies) and Adjunct-professor Angus McGregor (Global Studies) served as faculty advisers.
Following are the impressions of Eita Shimakura:
To prepare for NMUN, I read a lot about the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in the library, and I also looked up and learned a lot of vocabulary related to the United Nations and NPT Convention. I often met with my fellow teammates and prepared for the event with the help of professors Angus McGregor and Ian Gibson. Together we wrote position papers, speeches, studied the rules and procedures, and prepared our opinions for the conference.
The opening ceremony finally started, and I could hear a variety of languages from German and Spanish to Chinese and Ukrainian. It was a new experience for me, as I had never studied abroad before. Of course, I was nervous, but the feeling of anticipation overcame that. I had a lot of worries about whether I would be able to make friends and whether they would understand my English. However, as I began to meet people, I relaxed and thanks to that, I was able to enjoy the event and developed a desire to get to know the other students and cooperate with them towards a successful event. <Click here for the whole report>
