Have you heard of the term COIL? COIL stands for Collaborative Online International Learning. This involves learning projects and interactions between groups from different institutions using technology.
During term one, KUFS student groups led by assistant professors Brad Howe, Eric Lynch, and Jennifer Nihongi joined members of classes taught by KUFS’s long-term friend and collaborator, Professor Yi-Hung ‘Cathy’ Liao of Pingtung National University in Taiwan. They shared learning, research, and authentic cross-cultural communication using the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a basis for discussions and reports.
Using the convenience and creativity of Google Drive, collaborators created and shared a master plan on a colorful and interactive Google Sheet file. Students then worked on documents, group slide presentations, and a variety of student-organized online meetings. Participants had the opportunity to expand online skills, language abilities, and creativity.
We hope that in the future, more and more students will be able to benefit from collaborative projects using English as a lingua franca. Technology has enabled us to get the maximum benefit of international experiences and educational opportunities at KUFS.
